Venture Construction Group sponsors ALS Therapy Development Institute fundraiser

Local construction and restoration company raises money for pioneering biotech research

BOSTON – Venture Construction Group sponsored the fifth annual ALS Therapy Development Institute’s A White Coat Affair gala on November 14th at 6 p.m. at the Sheraton Boston hotel in Boston to raise funds for ALS research. The annual event had over 500 attendees and raised nearly $500,000. Venture Construction Group purchased a table as a Copper Sponsor for those living with ALS to attend. Sponsorship recipients included event speaker Andrea Peet and her family and friends. Peet was diagnosed with ALS in 2014 at the age of 33, less than one year after completing five triathlons in one season, including the 70.3 mile half Ironman. Peet spoke about her journey and asked attendees to support research.

“Andrea Peet, a person living and coping with ALS, was able to attend the event because of Mr. Shanton’s generosity. She gave a speech at the event that left not a dry eye in the house. Today, our scientists have access to an unprecedented amount of data in ALS that we are using expeditiously towards discovering therapies for people like Amanda who are living with this disease. We rely on the growing support of our communities, sponsors and partners to raise funds for this crucial research,” said Steve Perrin, Ph.D., CEO and CSO of the ALS Therapy Development Institute.

To date, the annual A White Coat Affair event has raised over $1,400,000 to accelerate the development of therapies at the ALS Therapy Development Institute. Part of the ALS network, thousands of supporters have joined the Institute since 2011 to honor the people facing ALS; celebrate progress, and join in the fight to change the prognosis of this disease.

According to the ALS Therapy Development Institute, there is only a single medicine for specifically treating ALS – riluzole. The drug, marketed by Sanofi-Aventis under the name Rilutek, extends life by only about 2 to 3 months. The urgent unmet medical need for more effective treatments for this devastating and fatal disease is the basis for the research and drug development effort at the nonprofit biotech organization, ALS Therapy Development Institute.

“I understand the frustrating journey that families and friends go through when a loved one is diagnosed with ALS. My dad was diagnosed with ALS in 2010 and passed away in 2012. Watching him endure this was painful. It totally changed my life and I know there are many out there going through this. I am determined to help beat this disease by supporting ALS research to help find a cure and help others who are enduring this,” says Steve Shanton, CEO and founder of Venture Construction Group.

A huge advocate for ALS research, Venture Construction Group sponsors numerous charitable events throughout the country, including the ALS Therapy Development Institute’s A White Coat Affair on November 14, 2015 in Boston, Massachusetts; the Ride to Defeat ALS in Tampa, Florida on November 7, 2015; the Walk to Defeat ALS in Miami-Dade county on September 26, 2015; the ALS Classic Golf Tournament on September 9, 2015 in Greater Chicago, Illinois; the ALS Express-Ride to Defeat ALS in New Jersey on May 30, 2015; the Fiesta 5K Run for ALS Research in Baltimore, Maryland on May 2, 2015; the Walk to Defeat ALS in West Palm Beach, Florida on March 21, 2015.
